Passion, strength, goals, dedication, love for football and top-class sports. These five elements paved the way for me to join one of the top European football teams, the German Borussia Dortmund, in the summer of 2017.
I have always been a hyperactive child. My brother, Odisseas, who is four years older than me introduced me to football, playing for Aris Petroupolis at that time. It was absolutely natural for me to follow his footsteps.
My parents, Kostas and Hara, used to take me to watch my brother in training sessions and football games as early as at the age of four. That’s also how I timidly started kicking the ball. However, it was Kostas Giouvanis, Aris Petroupolis’ coach who encouraged my parents to sign me in the Academy in the fall of 2005, although there was no relevant class age-wise.
Right from the onset, I wanted to compete with older guys. My excitement on the grass has captivated me and soon enough all I could think was merely football.
Even at school, I was overly eager to hear the bell ringing so that I could play football again.
Towards the end of 2005-6 season, I was already 7 years old. When we returned at home, right after a game between Aris Petroupolis and AO Peristeriou, our phone started ringing. To my parents’ surprise, Toni Savefski was calling to let them know that “Argiris is really talented and we want him in AEK”. I played for AEK FC Academy for two seasons and those years were a significant kick to my personal path in football.
In the summer of 2008, one of my early football dreams came true, when I joined to Olympiakos FC Academy. It was there where I fully developed my football skills, religiously following the guidance of my coaches and counting numerous training hours on my own too. No doubt this also meant a lot of sacrifices during my early childhood, which I never regretted. I already knew that my dream to become a professional football player was more important to me.
Playing in all around attacking positions, my progression with Olympiacos FC Academy has been marked by goals, assists, personal awards and two winning Championships, those of Super League U15 and U20.
Gradually, my performance in the athletic field has attracted the interest of other teams. As a result and upon their expression of interest, I joined Mixed Pireus Team and the National Youth Team later on. Joining Greece’s National Youth Team (U17, U19) was just another dream that was realized for me while the ultimate goal remains the Adult National Team of Greece.
The summer of 2017 has brought my first international contract. Borussia Dortmund’s proposition and future plans regarding my career with the team have overshadowed other proposals, including that of Olympiacos FC or any other international team.
In fact, it was Dortmund’s Chief Scouter, Sven Mislintat, who kept an eye on me, believed me and brought me to Borussia Dortmund. That was great honor for me.
After one year full of new experiences with Dortmund, Panathinaikos expressed an interest in me in summer 2018. At the time, there were more offers on the table from international teams.
However, Nikos Dabizas’ and Giorgos Donis’ vision for me made me realize that i should actually focus on one of the most important and historical teams in Greece. Undoubtedly, signing a three-year contract with Panathinaikos and returning to Greece to join the team constitute significant steps in the development of my career.
